Assemblies of God gets it right on homosexuality

GCM Watch applauds The Assemblies of God (AOG) for its excellent position statement on homosexuality. Its biblically sound, well researched and relevant. And most importantly, its official.

Although most pentecostal denominations (COGIC, PAW, COG, UPCI, and scores of offshoots) are still resistant to public polity statement on homosexuality, the AOG got it right. A wise assessment of the times and seasons we are in require us to do some things that were previously thought to be unnecessary.  Given the severe threat homosexual rights and homosexual affirming theology poses to the contemporary church, its still unclear as to why major pentecostal denominations still operate with horse and buggy mentality.

The AOG’s statement, approved by the General Presbytery in 2001 states in part:

Increasing political and religious advocacy for homosexuality1 has prompted us to restate our position on this critical issue.2 We believe that all matters of faith and conduct must be evaluated on the basis of Holy Scripture, which is our infallible guide (2 Timothy 3:16,17). Since the Bible does speak on the subject of homosexuality, it is imperative that the Church correctly understands and articulates the truth on this important contemporary issue.

This reaffirmation of truth has become all the more urgent because writers sympathetic to the homosexual community have advanced revisionist interpretations of relevant biblical texts that are based upon biased exegesis and mistranslation. In effect, they seek to set aside almost 2,000 years of Christian biblical interpretation and ethical teachings. We believe these efforts are reflective of the conditions described in 2 Timothy 4:3, “For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.”3

Exactly. Everything needs to be updated as the cultural norms began to place more and more demands that the church follow suit. Wise leaders understand this and take action. Others, who seek to conceal or ignore real issues in their midst will eventually fall victim to the very issue they ignored.

If youre a member of PAW, COGIC, UPCI, COGOP, FGBCF, COOLJC check your church site and see if there is a official policy statement on homosexuality.
