Holiness Pastor keeping bad company?

3 June 2007 No Comment

What is the lure of the gay christian movement to some pastors? Are they paid large fees? Do they honestly believe that homosexuality is not sinful? Or have they simply left their foundations of truth and compromised?  These questions are at the heart of scheduled appearance of a black Pentecostal-Holiness pastor in Henderson, NC at a gay christian function.

Pastor Mary Emma Evans is slated to perform a “gospel concert” at a gathering of Evangelicals Concerned  (EC) in July.  According to Evans’ website, she is also a city council member and a former United Church of Christ minister. What’s more, she is a familiar fixture in the region’s black gospel music community.

Our question to Pastor Evans would be: is it ever right under biblical guidance to hold fellowship with those who call themselves Christians, but yet embrace sexual immorality? Evans, no doubt as a former UCC minister has come face to face with gay christianity. The UCC is a leader in the promotion of gay christianity within the Christian community.  If Pastor Evans is no stranger to these circles, to what extent is her current denomination and music associates aware of her beliefs?

Its been my experience that generally such individuals operating in the black church/community compartmentalize their beliefs. For instance if “Pastor Jones” is preaching at a guest church, he will not so much as mention his association with progay religious elements. Yet, offsite, he will profess his committment to the gay christian movement. Is this the case with Pastor Evans?

In his address to the Corinthian church (which had a history of sexual issues), the  Apostle Paul was clear in these situations:

1 Corinthians 5:9-11

“I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner–not even to eat with such a person.

EC’s core beliefs clearly violate scripture. The very notion of an “integration” of sexual immorality and holiness mocks the Cross of Christ.  EC, in true gcm format, (1) glances over scripture, (2) ignores sexual restrictions and (3) creates a value-less belief system contingent not upon obedience to Christ, but self acceptance and situational ethics.

EC practices a revamped form of the heresy called antinomianismAntinominianism is a combination of two words anti nomos which mean against the law. Antinomians believed that could not be held accountable to any moral law. They subscribed to a fallacious interpretation and thus application of sola gratias, only grace. Such misappropriation of the grace covenant (Romans 6:1) leads EC and other gay christian movement adherents to believe that as long as they “believe” or “love” (loosely defined) the law of God in respect to sexual morality does not apply to them.

The apostle John addressed this false doctrine in 1 John 3:3-8 .  This brings us back to our original question: why is Mary Emma Evans associating with Evangelicals Concerned?
